The final report of the Penrose Inquiry into Hepatitis C and HIV acquired infection from NHS treatment was published on the 25th March 2015. The report is unlikely to bring comfort to those infected or to the families of lost loved ones but may at the very least provide an insight into the reasons why this tragedy occurred.
I welcome the apology from the Prime Minister on behalf of the UK government as he acknowledged that thousands have suffered for something that should not have happened. It’s now incumbent on the government to ensure appropriate compensation be paid to patients and families affected. The UK and Scottish governments must ensure that lessons are learned and that the right measures are in place to ensure that blood products and blood transfusions are safe.
Today our thoughts should be with those who have suffered so much since this disaster occurred.
